Scottish Ensemble - Shostakovich - Northern Echo

Shostakovich's Chamber Symphony is in fact Rudolph Barshai's arrangement of the Eighth String Quartet with its overtones of war and, ion particular, the total destruction of Dresden. The quartet is indeed, dedicated to "the victims of war and fascism". The Two pieces for Octet, both student works, are indicators of the genius about to flower.
