SCO & Sean Shibe - Maxwell Davies: An Orkney Wedding, With Sunrise - Financial Times

This disc was not intended as a memorial to Maxwell Davies, who died in March, but it fits the bill nicely.

The composer's life in Orkney features throughout a varied programme of orchestral pieces and guitar solos played by Sean Shibe.

The concert overture Ebb of Winter was written for the SCO in 2014 and gets an atmospheric performance under conductor Ben Gernon.

The Last Door of Light, from 2009, is a meditation on lives lost off the coast and the disc ends with the perennial favourite, An Orkney Wedding with Sunrise - convivial, celebratory, bagpipes to the fore.
