Robin Ticciati & SRSO - Berlioz: Romeo et Juliette - BBC Radio 3 'Record Review'
Not only does the brass have a more menacing edge to it, but there's a sense of recitative, of vocal flexibility about the way they play those phrases. The recording pulls us in closer as well, you can feel the heat being generated here. This is the one that is crackling with a sense of danger to me. The chorus is balanced more closely and more immediacy than the other two [Gergiev and Andrew Davis' recordings], and more realistically with the mezzo. All in all, an immersive experience...a similar sense of newness, freshness and engagement and the colour in Belioz's score, which makes their playing of the love scene in Romeo and Juliet intimate and sensual. And then Queen Mab scherzo is alive with Mendelssohnian delicacy.
...
You've probably guessed by now, this is the one of these three newcomers that I've enjoyed the most for its freshness and vivacity; the way Berlioz's extraordinary orchestra colours spring to life and the intimacy and detail of the Linn recording.
