Phantasm - J.S. Bach: The Well-Tempered Consort – I - Le Devoir

Ce sublime disque du consort de violes Phantasm est en premier lieu un enchantement sonore. Linn avait à l’origine lancé une étiquette pour mettre en évidence son matériel audio. L’adéquation entre produit artistique et audiophile s’est rarement aussi brillamment conjuguée et exprimée qu’ici. Sur le plan artistique, aussi, le créneau est porteur. L’œuvre de Bach est riche de sources musicales dont les intrications polyphoniques peuvent être traduites et illuminées par un consort de violes. On connaît à ce titre les enregistrements (Art de la fugue, Variations Goldberg, Bach Alio modo) de l’ensemble Fretwork chez Harmonia Mundi. Ce Well-Tempered Consort est le pendant, sans trop de recoupements, du Bach Alio modo de Fretwork. Mais le trait est plus léger, plus gracieux, plus « ailé ». Là où Fretwork énonce la musique, Phantasm chante et déploie des lignes, tisse une toile avec une subtilité arachnéenne. La comparaison des deux Ricercar à 6 de L’offrande musicale est édifiante, timbres des instruments en prime ! Révélateur. Immense.

This sublime recording by the viol consort Phantasm is first and foremost a sonic delight. Linn originally launched a label to showcase its audio gear. Rarely has the match between an artistic achievement and a product for audiophiles been so brilliantly coupled and expressed as here. In artistic terms, too, the recording occupies a strong niche. Bach's works are rich in musical references and their polyphonic intricacies lend themselves well to translation and illumination by a consort of viols. In this connection, the recordings (Art of Fugue, Goldberg Variations, Alio modo) made by Fretwork for Harmonia Mundi come to mind. This Well-Tempered Consort in fact forms a kind of counterpart, though without too many overlaps, of the Bach Alio modo disc by Fretwork. Yet the brush stroke is lighter, more graceful, more "soaring". Whereas Fretwork enunciates the music, Phantasm sings and unravels the lines, weaving a web with spider-like subtlety. The comparison of the two Ricercars à 6 from the Musical Offering is instructive, with Phantasm’s instrumental timbres an added bonus! Revelatory. Amazing.
