Phantasm - Dowland: Lachrimae - BBC Radio 3 'Building A Library'
My overall Building A Library recommendation is that by Phantasm. This recording stands out for its sheer lyricism combined with moments of heightened emotion that hold true to Dowland’s passionate pavans. There are moments of intense sadness, but also outbursts of passion, as well as moments of light and reflection. When Dowland dedicated the collection to Anne of Denmark he reminded her that “no doubt pleasant are the teares which Musicke weeps, neither are teares shed always in sorrow but sometime in joy and gladnesse”.
