Martin Taylor - Spirit of Django - The Observer
It can't be - but it is! It was 10 years ago that this refreshing and delightful sound burst upon the jazz scene. That's long enough for a whole new generation of listeners to experience it for the first time. With this band Martin Taylor discovered a new and entirely original way to explore and extend the musical world of Django Reinhardt, the first great European jazz artist. He succeeded in creating something that was undeniably modern but filled with echoes of an earlier time. The featured instruments are his own, gorgeously acoustic guitar, the saxophone of Dave O'Higgins and the accordion of Jack Emblow. Indeed, it was the veteran Emblow who often stole the show at live concerts, with his bright and slippery improvisations.
