Magnificat - Scattered Ashes - Choir & Organ
Savonarola would have been appalled by the exquisite polyphony his meditations inspired and this superbly thought-through programme marking Magnificat's 25th anniversary is, ironically, a spiritual and artistic riposte to his puritanical fanaticism, bringing together sublime settings of Psalms 50 and 30, notably the monumental Miserere of Josquin, with motets quoting the monk's own meditations by Gombert, Lassus and Byrd. Beautifully balanced singing, super-smooth and refined, plus gloriously warm recorded sound combine with breadth and spaciousness of interpretation to celebrate that mystic union of human creativity with heavenly aspiration that Savonarola so mistrusted.
