Ian Bruce - Alloway Tales - The Scots Magazine
Ian Bruce brings robust good humour to his Alloway Tales, a collection based upon the song-works of Robert Burns, and enhanced by the talents of a cornucopia of guest players, like Dougie Pincock,Ian Anderson, Catriona Macdonald, Tony McManus, John Martin, Marc Duff and Billy Jackson. Though the words may be familiar enough, this collection has its own fascinations, not least the effective contrast between the unaccompanied "Parcel Of Rogues In A Nation" followed by an up-beat, jaunty version of "A Man's A Man For A' That", and check out the wistful emotion of "Auld Lang Syne" to the original tune. As befits a man whose father was Pipe Major of the London Scottish, the Scottishness is as up-front as the music. Good one, Ian!
