Gottlieb Wallisch - Mozart in Vienna - Scotland on Sunday
Mozart cut two ties in moving in 1781 to Vienna, the Austro-Hungarian capital that was to be home, as it turned out, for the ten remaining years of his life. Firstly, within two months, he freed himself from the chains of his post as choirmaster and court organist to Archbishop Colloredo of Salzburg. Secondly, he physically distanced himself from his father Leopold, who had, since Mozart's infancy, directed his career. Within a matter of weeks, Mozart was finding students to teach and setting up concerts in which to perform his increasingly fashionable music.
This expert recording of Mozart's music from his Vienna years comprises almost half his musical output. It also displays the range of music Mozart was able to compose: rondos, sonatas and variations make up this highly enjoyable CD.
