Catriona Morison - The dark night has vanished - BBC Radio 3 'Record Review'
... a very special set of songs by Josephine Lang, who was a member of that very powerful musical circle around Schumann and Brahms in the mid-nineteenth century and she wrote around 300 songs throughout a very difficult life and very unusually she didn't stop composing through marriage, motherhood and widowhood so it's an interesting contrast to say her friend Clara Schumann who did stop so I thought that this recordings gives us a voice that will be unfamiliar to many of us. This is her very lovely Scheideblick, and it's a wonderful poem. Let's enjoy these long-breathed gently unfolding phrases now.
She sounds very, very comfortable, very assured in this repertoire she just has such a beautiful compelling sound and I love the way this recital is put together because it really allows Lang to take her rightful place amongst other much more famous song composers. So absolutely thumbs up to Morison and Martineau for this recital.
