Montpellier Cello Quartet
Montpellier Cello Quartet
The Montpellier Cello Quartet performs and inspires a truly eclectic range of music. They bring the rich, warm sound of four cellos to a diverse mixture of classical music, pop, tango and jazz, performing existing quartet repertoire alongside new works.
Biography
The Brighton-based quartet was formed in 2010 by Dan James, Sarah Stevens (now Sarah Davison), Joe Giddey and Siriol Hugh-Jones. Individually, the members of the quartet have played in many of the UK's professional orchestras including The London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and National Chamber Orchestra of Wales.
Artists who have performed or recorded with them range from Sir James Galway, Bryn Terfel, and Andrea Bocelli to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Justin Hayward, DJ Format, McFly, Judie Tzuke and Kanye West.
In the second half of 2012 they embarked on a partnership with jazz vocalist Claire Martin OBE in a magical sound fusion of jazz-chamber music written for the ensemble by internationally renowned composers including Richard Rodney Bennett, Mark Anthony Turnage and Django Bates. With Claire, they have performed all over the country, including at the Elgar Room in the Royal Albert Hall, Bristol's Colston Hall, the Halesworth Arts Festival, the Ropetackle in Shoreham, the De la Warr Pavilion in Bexhill, the Atkinson in Southport and the Drill Hall in Lincoln.
Between them, the quartet has a dog who sits in on most rehearsals, a courageous kitten and two didgeridoos.
