Biography
Magnificat is one of the world’s leading vocal consorts, admired for the variety and expressive detail of its interpretations of Renaissance and Baroque choral works. The ensemble performs in a predominantly one voice per part configuration, celebrating the character and colour of each singer’s voice while uniting them in an exceptional chemistry.
Recording exclusively for Linn, Magnificat has released a dozen acclaimed albums ranging from pre- and post-Reformation music by Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, to discoveries by Philippe Rogier, and bold interpretations of Heinrich Schütz’s Cantiones sacrae.
Reviews
'Magnificat's velvety sound is at its most luxurious. This sonorous ensemble create a wonderfully melancholic sound world. Their interpretations of the post-Josquin generation of continental composers are among the finest on disc.'
Gramophone
'sumptuous...they balance inwardness with text-centered singing and profound lyrical beauty. Highly recommended.'
All Music
'...the pure, unadorned quality of the singing and the range of music make this essential listening.'
The Observer
'Fascinating...The sixteen-strong choir Magnificat draws out the essence of this music over a generous eighty-four minutes, matching the excellent scholarship that has led to this disc.'
